OUR STORY
In the far north of the province of A Coruña, facing the entrance to the Ferrol estuary, very close to a fishing village named Ares, a picturesque town named Redes, and surrounded by lush natural scenery, stands Casa de los Ingenieros. A place brought back to life after more than a century of silence.
Built in 1892, it housed the military engineers responsible for constructing the defensive batteries that protected the Ferrol estuary. Over time, the building was abandoned and reduced to a bare stone structure that only hinted at its former grandeur.
Today, after a meticulous restoration and contemporary yet respectful interior design project, Casa de los Ingenieros has been reborn. The essence of the place and its materials has been preserved while offering new warmth and life.
The project highlights traditional Galician granite, natural materials, refined textures, and a color palette inspired by the surrounding landscape. Native woods such as iroko—long used in shipbuilding for their strength and durability—were incorporated into the carpentry.
The restoration was designed around natural light. The original, expansive windows were reinterpreted with modern frames that transform the landscape into living artwork, connecting each interior space with the marine and forest surroundings. Light floods the home, creating a continuous dialogue between memory and comfort.
Inside, the design embraces simplicity and refined, clean lines. Carefully curated furniture brings together restored pieces and contemporary elements, enhancing an atmosphere of calm, warmth, and authenticity.
The home opens to the outdoors through a contemporary extension that continues the original structure and connects it with the terrace and the infinity pool. This gesture integrates the new architecture into the surrounding landscape, creating a seamless dialogue between past and present. The fusion of historical character and modern design defines the essence of the project: honoring heritage without giving up contemporary comfort.
This project shows that design can serve as a form of memory. A way of preserving history through beauty, light, and materiality.
Casa de los Ingenieros in Chanteiro once again takes its place in the landscape, not as a ruin, but as a living testament to architecture’s ability to reconcile time.
Beyond restoring the splendor of a unique dwelling, the intervention also aims to highlight the historical heritage of Chanteiro, an enclave that shelters remarkable yet often overlooked treasures such as the Church of La Merced, a 15th-century temple of great cultural value.
